SmartSpeed User Options

Different drill types, and SmartSpeed systems (Pro, Dash) and optional accessories (SmartScan, Portable Jump Mat, SmartPad, SmartShoxx) include different user options.

Some of the main options are detailed below.

Drill Modes

Automatic mode

Once an athlete is finished, the application will move to the next athlete in the list by default, and if anyone breaks the beam on the start gate, the drill will start.

Users can still change the athlete order by selecting an athlete from the list, provided the next athlete hasn’t already broken the beam on the start gate.

Please note - this mode is not recommended if there are many people walking around that might walk through the start beam by accident.

Manual mode

Users will choose from a list of which specific athlete is running next and press Go.

Between athletes, users can leave the gates and it won’t matter if people walk through them by mistake.

The application will move to the next athlete in the list by default, and users press Go to activate the gates.

RFID mode

SmartScan (RFID) can be connected to the SmartSpeed system to run the RFID mode.

This mode automatically identifies the athlete when they swipe their wrist band at the start gate and go.

Between athletes, it doesn’t matter if people walk through the gates – provided they are not wearing an RFID wristband.

Start Types

Standard start

Timing starts when the athlete breaks the beam on the start gate. If a Portable Jump Mat, SmartPad or SmartShoxx is connected to the start timing unit, timing will start when the device is first triggered.

In Beam / SmartPad start

The athlete starts in the start gate beam or presses down on the SmartPad for 3 seconds until the start gate becomes activated.

The timing unit on the start gate will turn solid green when the gate is activated (or beep for SmartSpeed Dash). Timing starts when the athlete leaves the beam of the start gate or when their hand comes off the SmartPad.

Reactive start

SmartSpeed Pro system only. Timing starts when the timing unit on the start gate flashes green (and beeps, if the user selects) after a random period of time between 1-3 seconds (default 1-3 seconds). Reaction time will be calculated from the time of the first green light flash to the time the athlete breaks the beam of the start gate.

Rearming Options

Rearming

Timing gate beams are reactivated after they are broken (rearm time). A default delay of 500 milliseconds (half a second) is added before a gate is reactivated. This default delay is in addition to the ECP sample time of 1 second.

Examples of when a user may need to change the rearm delay:

  • If an athlete is to break the same gate within 1.2 seconds, split times. The user will need to lower the rearm delay
  • If an athlete is to break a timing gate, but then pass back through it without breaking the gate. The user will need to increase rearm delay.
